MEMORIES OF A VALUED EMPLOYEE WHO MADE THE MOST AMAZING EASTER BASKETS…
One of the first employees at McKeesport Candy Co., was a woman named Betty Eschelbacher who has hired by my Grandfather, Ernest Prince, when he founded the company in 1927.
She was an amazing employee who never missed a day of work in over sixty (60) years and had an all but photographic memory but her real claim to fame was that she made the most beautiful handmade Easter Basket.
Not a year went by when she didn’t surprise me and my brothers and sisters with a basket filled to capacity with jelly beans, unique chocolate items and other holiday specific candies. Whether we were at home or away at school, these marvelous creations never failed to appear and astonish us.
To this day, I still remember my surprise at receiving a five (5) pound solid chocolate poodle not to mention countless other treats like Pecan Nougat Eggs and Easter Pez Dispensers.
Although Betty passed away in 1990, her spirit of holiday generosity remains and serves as a benchmark for how the holiday should be celebrated.
